10 Tips for Better Writing and Becoming Successful

October 30, 2007

Before I start rustling up 10 tips for better writing let us get few things straight. There are writers or copywriters on the net each claiming to be the best and you are lost.

You don’t know who is the best and whom to turn to for guidance; you have been looking for someone who could give you few copy writing tips so that you could also kick start or jump start your writing career. You are creative, you have the flow but still don’t seem to be getting much ahead in the race. Well read on for top ten tips for better writing if all this seems to be you!

Why These 10 Tips for Better Writing are Important?

  1. To begin with you must have some knowledge of the subject you are going to write on. In case you have been asked to write on a subject which you are totally ignorant about, then it is always advisable that you educate yourself first. Never, never try to write without understanding what you are writing.

You need not become an authority on it, but you must have at least some knowledge and you must know what you are writing. How can the reader be convinced on what you are writing if you yourself are not convinced!

  2. Always use simple language. Many writers tend to show off their above average vocabulary and try to impress the average reader with their collection of impressive sounding words.

But you must always remember that you are writing for an average person whose knowledge is average, and he is looking for information because he is not an expert. He wouldn’t be here in the first place, so always write in simple English for simple people, unless of course you are writing a thesis or providing super expert knowledge. However at times it becomes necessary to use few technical words, but then that much is excused no doubt.

  3. Always use short sentences and short paragraphs. The very look of long sentences and full page or half page paragraphs tend to tire the mind even before the reader starts reading!

  4. A great tool that I find helpful is the ‘synonyms’ tool in the thesaurus. Many writers tend to repeat the same words over and over again. Use of ‘synonyms’ tool is very helpful for avoiding repetition of the same words.

  5. You should avoid repeating yourself. Don’t go on repeating the same point again and again. It lowers the overall quality of your article and your writing standard.

  6. It is always advisable that you write in active voice instead of passive voice for easy reading. Passive voice strains the brain.

  7. It is also advised that you break up your article into headings and sub headings. They are easy in the mind of the reader and the reader automatically knows at a glance whether the information he is looking for is available or not.

  8. Try to use bullets and numbers wherever you can. They are again easy in the mind and the eyes.

  9. Wrap up the article that you have given with proper conclusion. The reader shouldn’t feel that he has been left midway, gasping for more in information, unless of course you are witting teasers.

  10. In the end always proof read your article at least twice and leave it aside for a while, say for a day and then again read it. You will be surprised how many errors seem to have cropped up!

Follow the 10 tips for better writing given above and you are sure to succeed in your writing career!
